We performed a knowledge, attitudes, and practice (KAP) survey of bedside nurses to evaluate perceptions of antimicrobial use and aid in the design of nursing-based antimicrobial stewardship interventions. The survey highlighted discrepancies in knowledge and practice as well as opportunities to improve communication with nursing colleagues.
Habitual consumption of high-fibre bread fortified with bean hulls increased plasma indole-3-propionic concentration and decreased putrescine and deoxycholic acid faecal concentrations in healthy volunteers

Only 6 to 8 % of the UK adults meet the daily recommendation for dietary fibre. Fava bean processing lead to vast amounts of high-fibre by-products such as hulls. Bean hull fortified bread was formulated to increase and diversify dietary fibre while reducing waste. This study assessed the bean hull: suitability as a source of dietary fibre; the systemic and microbial metabolism of its components and postprandial events following bean hull bread rolls. Nine healthy participants (53·9 ± 16·7 years) were recruited for a randomised controlled crossover study attending two 3 days intervention sessions, involving the consumption of two bread rolls per day (control or bean hull rolls). Blood and faecal samples were collected before and after each session and analysed for systemic and microbial metabolites of bread roll components using targeted LC-MS/MS and GC analysis. Satiety, gut hormones, glucose, insulin and gastric emptying biomarkers were also measured. Two bean hull rolls provided over 85 % of the daily recommendation for dietary fibre; but despite being a rich source of plant metabolites (P = 0·04 v. control bread), these had poor systemic bioavailability. Consumption of bean hull rolls for 3 days significantly increased plasma concentration of indole-3-propionic acid (P = 0·009) and decreased faecal concentration of putrescine (P = 0·035) and deoxycholic acid (P = 0·046). However, it had no effect on postprandial plasma gut hormones, bacterial composition and faecal short chain fatty acids amount. Therefore, bean hulls require further processing to improve their bioactives systemic availability and fibre fermentation.
Plants critical for Hawaiian land snail conservation: arboreal snail plant preferences in Puʻu Kukui Watershed, Maui

The Hawaiian archipelago was formerly home to one of the most species-rich land snail faunas (> 752 species), with levels of endemism > 99%. Many native Hawaiian land snail species are now extinct, and the remaining fauna is vulnerable. Unfortunately, lack of information on critical habitat requirements for Hawaiian land snails limits the development of effective conservation strategies. The purpose of this study was to examine the plant host preferences of native arboreal land snails in Puʻu Kukui Watershed, West Maui, Hawaiʻi, and compare these patterns to those from similar studies on the islands of Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi. Concordant with studies on other islands, we found that four species from three diverse families of snails in Puʻu Kukui Watershed had preferences for a few species of understorey plants. These were not the most abundant canopy or mid canopy species, indicating that forests without key understorey plants may not support the few remaining lineages of native snails. Preference for Broussaisia arguta among various island endemic snails across all studies indicates that this species is important for restoration to improve snail habitat. As studies examining host plant preferences are often incongruent with studies examining snail feeding, we suggest that we are in the infancy of defining what constitutes critical habitat for most Hawaiian arboreal snails. However, our results indicate that preserving diverse native plant assemblages, particularly understorey plant species, which facilitate key interactions, is critical to the goal of conserving the remaining threatened snail fauna.
Smectite-polymer interactions in aqueous systems

Neutron scattering studies have indicated that the non-coordinated water at smectite surfaces has a similar mobility to that of bulk water, but that the water coordinated to the cations is immobile on the time scale of the neutron measurements. Thus hydrophylic polymers can readily displace the non-coordinated water and bind to the silicate surface, and to the exchangeable cations through a water-bridge mechanism. Poly(ethylene oxide) molecules with molecular weights up to 4000 appear to be bound to Na-montmorillonite in flattened conformations at the clay surface. Poly(vinyl alcohol) is extensively bound by Na-montmorillonite and by Na-Laponite (a synthetic hectorite-like clay); as binding progresses fewer molecule segments can contact the surface and so at the higher levels of adsorption extensive loops of polymer extend away from the silicate surface. Some polyanions provide good protection for smectites against flocculation with salt. The abilities of such polymers to protect the clays is dependent both on the extents of the charges and on the solution conformations which these polymers can assume.
Modelling the distribution in Hawaii of Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm) in its gastropod hosts

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (rat lungworm), a parasitic nematode, is expanding its distribution. Human infection, known as angiostrongyliasis, may manifest as eosinophilic meningitis, an emerging infectious disease. The range and incidence of this disease are expanding throughout the tropics and subtropics. Recently, the Hawaiian Islands have experienced an increase in reported cases. This study addresses factors affecting the parasite's distribution and projects its potential future distribution, using Hawaii as a model for its global expansion. Specimens of 37 snail species from the Hawaiian Islands were screened for the parasite using PCR. It was present on five of the six largest islands. The data were used to generate habitat suitability models for A. cantonensis, based on temperature and precipitation, to predict its potential further spread within the archipelago. The best current climate model predicted suitable habitat on all islands, with greater suitability in regions with higher precipitation and temperatures. Projections under climate change (to 2100) indicated increased suitability in regions with estimated increased precipitation and temperatures, suitable habitat occurring increasingly at higher elevations. Analogously, climate change could facilitate the spread of A. cantonensis from its current tropical/subtropical range into more temperate regions of the world, as is beginning to be seen in the continental USA.

Phorate {O,O-diethyl S-[(ethylthio)methyl] phosphorodithioate}, disulfoton {O,O-diethyl S-[2-(ethylthio)ethyl] phosphorodithioate}, linuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1-methoxy-1-methylurea], or metribuzin [4-amino-6-tert-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as-triazin-5(4H)-one] when used alone did not reduce soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr. ‘Calland’] grain yield or plant population. However, combinations of metribuzin with either phorate or disulfoton interacted synergistically to reduce both soybean grain yield and plant population significantly even at recommended rates of both chemicals. Combinations of linuron with either phorate or disulfoton at recommended rates did not reduce soybean grain yield or plant population. Greenhouse studies further substantiated the synergistic interaction of phorate or disulfoton with metribuzin.
Mercury, n-alkane and unresolved complex mixture hydrocarbon pollution in surface sediment across the rural–urban–estuarine continuum of the River Clyde, Scotland, UK

Surface sediments (n=85) from a 160-km river-estuarine transect of the Clyde, UK, were analysed for total mercury (Hg), saturated hydrocarbons and unresolved complex mixtures (UCMs) of hydrocarbons. Results show that sediment-Hg concentration ranges from 0.01 to 1.38mgkg–1 (mean 0.20mgkg–1) and a spatial trend in Hg-content low–high–low–high, from freshwater source, to Glasgow, to estuary, is evident. In summary, sediment-Hg content is low in the upper Clyde (mean of 0.05Hg mgkg–1), whereas sediments from the Clyde in urbanised Glasgow have higher Hg concentrations (0.04 to 1.26mgkg–1; mean 0.45mgkg–1), and the inner estuary sediments contain less Hg (mean 0.06mgkg–1). The highest mean sediment Hg (0.65mgkg–1) found in the outer estuary is attributed to historical anthropogenic activities. A significant positive Spearman correlation between Hg and total organic carbon is observed throughout the river estuary (0.86; P<0.001). Comparison with Marine Scotland guidelines suggests that no sites exceed the 1.5mgkg–1 criterion (Action Level 2); 22 fall between 0.25 and 1.5mgkg–1 dry wt. (Action Level 1) and 63 are of no immediate concern (<0.25mgkg–1 dry wt.). Saturated (n-alkane) hydrocarbons in the upper Clyde are of natural terrestrial origin. By contrast, the urbanised Glasgow reaches and outer estuary are characterised by pronounced and potentially toxic UCM concentrations in sediments (380–914mg/kg and 103–247mgkg–1, respectively), suggesting anthropogenic inputs such as biodegraded crude oil, sewage discharge and/or urban run-off.
Genomic selection for feed efficiency in dairy cattle

Feed is a major component of variable costs associated with dairy systems and is therefore an important consideration for breeding objectives. As a result, measures of feed efficiency are becoming popular traits for genetic analyses. Already, several countries account for feed efficiency in their breeding objectives by approximating the amount of energy required for milk production, maintenance, etc. However, variation in actual feed intake is currently not captured in dairy selection objectives, although this could be possible by evaluating traits such as residual feed intake (RFI), defined as the difference between actual and predicted feed (or energy) intake. As feed intake is expensive to accurately measure on large numbers of cows, phenotypes derived from it are obvious candidates for genomic selection provided that: (1) the trait is heritable; (2) the reliability of genomic predictions are acceptable to those using the breeding values; and (3) if breeding values are estimated for heifers, rather than cows then the heifer and cow traits need to be correlated. The accuracy of genomic prediction of dry matter intake (DMI) and RFI has been estimated to be around 0.4 in beef and dairy cattle studies. There are opportunities to increase the accuracy of prediction, for example, pooling data from three research herds (in Australia and Europe) has been shown to increase the accuracy of genomic prediction of DMI from 0.33 within country to 0.35 using a three-country reference population. Before including RFI as a selection objective, genetic correlations with other traits need to be estimated. Weak unfavourable genetic correlations between RFI and fertility have been published. This could be because RFI is mathematically similar to the calculation of energy balance and failure to account for mobilisation of body reserves correctly may result in selection for a trait that is similar to selecting for reduced (or negative) energy balance. So, if RFI is to become a selection objective, then including it in an overall multi-trait selection index where the breeding objective is net profit is sensible, as this would allow genetic correlations with other traits to be properly accounted for. If genetic parameters are accurately estimated then RFI is a logical breeding objective. If there is uncertainty in these, then DMI may be preferable.

The pressure distribution which results from the disturbance of initially plane, parallel, and constant-pressure inviscid supersonic flow in which there is a strong entropy variation near a surface is investigated. The disturbance considered may arise from a small deflection of the surface or may be the result of a simple wave impinging on the entropy layer. This linear problem has been treated previously by a somewhat different technique for transonic entropy layers by Howarth (1948), Tsien & Finston (1949), and Lighthill (1950, 1953). The results obtained in this investigation are useful principally in that they permit the general behaviour of such pressure distributions to be deduced without resort to the more general method of characteristics for rotational flows.
Identifying hazards in complex ecological systems. Part 3: Hierarchical Holographic Model for herbicide tolerant oilseed rape

This paper is the third in a series designed to demonstrate the application of rigorous, systematic hazard identification techniques to ecological systems. Here we use Hierarchical Holographic Modelling to identify the potential ecological hazards associated with the commercial release of herbicide tolerant oilseed rape. Hierarchical Holographic Models decompose complex systems into a series of sub-systems and consider interactions between the components and processes of these sub-systems in order to identify hazards. In this example we considered 1356 potential interactions between the biological, chemical and physical components and processes of the herbicide tolerant oilseed rape environment, and identified 152 potential hazards, grouped into 14 categories. The hazards were subsequently scored for degree of concern and plausibility, and then compared with an equivalent list of hazards generated independently by a checklist approach. The incidence of herbicide tolerant volunteers (and weeds) both on and off the farm had the highest average score of all the ecological hazard categories. The checklist based approach identified or implied 44% of the hazards identified in the Hierarchical Holographic Model, including nine of the ten hazards ranked most important. The checklist approach focussed almost exclusively on the phenotypic and genotypic hazards associated with herbicide tolerant oilseed rape and largely ignored the hazards associated with the circumstances surrounding its use. As a result the checklist identified only 6 out of the 79 potential hazards associated with changes to farming practice. The commercial release of herbicide tolerant oilseed rape will be associated with changes in tillage and the application of post-emergent herbicides. It may also lead to changes in spray schedules of insecticide and fungicide. Many of the environmental hazards identified with these changes are plausible and may warrant further investigation or targeted monitoring.

Summary
Introduction
Fisheries exist throughout the world wherever people and water meet (Nielsen, 1999). Essentially, a fishery can be defined as a complex system made up of three interacting components: habitat, the aquatic environment where an organism lives; biota, the living organisms in the aquatic ecosystem; and people, who harvest the biotic resource or who change the condition of its environment (Willis and Murphy, 1996). Throughout its history, the principal goal of fisheries management has been “to provide people with a sustained, high, and ever increasing benefit from their use of living aquatic resources” by manipulating these three components (Nielsen, 1999). Over time, the primary focus of fisheries management has shifted from providing the maximum sustainable harvest to providing a variety of different benefits that arise as a result of the interaction of people, habitats, and organisms (see Nielsen, 1999 for a brief history of fisheries management).
In the beginning, fisheries management was primarily concerned with providing food, and secondarily with providing economic benefit, for an everincreasing human population. For this reason, fish were viewed as crops, and the efficient use of fish populations, or providing maximum sustainable yield (MSY), became the driving philosophy during the early twentieth century (Nielsen, 1999). To provide MSY, fishery managers focused on a single-species, single-habitat approach, using population dynamics and biological yield models to predict the maximum harvest level a fishery could sustain. However, as the human population grew, demands on fishery resources and aquatic habitats increased, and fishery scientists began to realize that maximizing the weight or number of fish harvested was not always the most appropriate goal for a fishery.

The creep behavior of a cryomilled ultrafine-grained Al–Mg alloy was examined. The grain size ranged from 300 to 400 nm. The stress exponents ranged from 7.2 to 7.4. The apparent activation energy for creep, 83.7 kJ/mol at 27.5 MPa and 77 kJ/mol at 38 MPa, agreed well with the activation energy for grain boundary diffusion in aluminum. Transmission electron microscope analysis following creep at 300 °C to approximately 0.2% strain in 1411 h revealed the grain size was unchanged from its as-extruded size indicating significant thermal stability of this material at relatively high fractions of the melting temperature. The creep resistance of the Al–Mg alloy was rationalized in terms of an attractive interaction between grain boundary dislocations and incoherent particles within the boundary region, which suppressed grain boundary deformation. The grain boundary particles also led to high thermal stability by exerting a Zener pinning force on the grain boundaries, thus inhibiting grain growth at high temperatures.

En bloc staining with basic fuchsin is an established method for demonstrating microdamage in bone. Using transmitted light microscopy, variations in light intensity, depth of focus and magnification are necessary to distinguish fully-stained microcracks generated in vivo, from partially-stained or unstained artefactual cracks due to cutting and machining. This process is both difficult and time-consuming. In this study, 2 methods were used to examine fuchsin-stained microcracks in human rib sections, transmitted light and epifluorescence microscopy. No differences were found in crack number, density or length between the 2 methods indicating comparable accuracy. Using green epifluorescence, only microcracks containing fuchsin fluoresced orange against the darkfield background, enabling unstained, artefactual cracks to be screened out. Under UV epifluorescence, microcracks stained through the full 100 μm depth of the section fluoresced purple. Partially-stained artefactual cracks failed to fluoresce and were screened out. Epifluorescence is a simple, rapid and accurate screening method for differentiating fully-stained from artefactual microcracks in bone.

The influences of age at first pregnancy and number of suckling young on maternal performance of mice were studied. Mean mating ages for early-pregnant and normal-pregnant females were 27 and 52 days respectively. Litter size from parturition (day 0) to day 12 of lactation was standardized to either 8 or 12 pups. The more rapid (P<0·01) growth rate and feed conversion efficiency of early-pregnant dams from mating to parturition continued from 0 to 12 days of lactation but occurred primarily in the first 3 days of lactation, so that there were no differences in body weight or feed intake from days 3 to 12 of lactation. There were no age at pregnancy effects on total mammary gland DNA, RNA or RNA/DNA ratio at day 12 of lactation or on individual progeny weights or feed conversion efficiency of litter growth from 3 to 12 days of lactation. Dams suckling eight young had a lower (P<0·01) feed intake, gain and feed conversion efficiency from 0 to 3 days of lactation. From 0 to 12 days of lactation, these dams were smaller, consumed less feed and their individual progeny weights were larger (P<0·01). Dams suckling eight pups had smaller (P<O01) mammary glands, less (P < 0·05) mammary gland DNA and a higher (P<0·05) RNA/DNA ratio. Interactions between pregnancy age and number suckling were not significant. Feed intake of the dam from 0 to 12 days of lactation was influenced more by litter weight gain (34%) than either dam weight gain (5%) or metabolic body size (6%). Maternal performance of mice, based on pup growth and mammary gland growth and function, was not affected by early pregnancy.
